A quick-reference glossary of the most common terms, acronyms, and industry jargon you will encounter when buying, selling, and managing IBC containers.
IBC
Intermediate Bulk Container — a reusable industrial container for storing and transporting bulk liquids and granulated materials, typically 110-550 gallons.
HDPE
High-Density Polyethylene — the primary plastic used for IBC inner bottles. Known for chemical resistance, durability, and FDA-approved food-grade formulations.
Rebottling
The process of removing a worn HDPE inner bottle from an IBC cage and installing a brand-new bottle, effectively restoring the tote to like-new condition.
Reconditioning
A comprehensive refurbishment process that includes cleaning, sanitizing, replacing gaskets and valves, inspecting the cage, and relabeling the tote.
UN Marking
A standardized label stamped on IBC cages indicating the container meets United Nations packaging specifications for transporting hazardous materials.
Specific Gravity (SG)
The ratio of a liquid's density to water's density. IBC totes are rated for a maximum SG — exceeding it voids UN certification and creates safety risks.
Butterfly Valve
A flow-control valve using a rotating disc, commonly found on standard HDPE IBC totes. Best suited for water and thin liquids.
Ball Valve
A flow-control valve using a spherical plug with a hole through the center. Provides a tighter seal than butterfly valves, preferred for chemicals and viscous liquids.
Cage
The galvanized or powder-coated steel frame that surrounds and protects the HDPE inner bottle of a composite IBC tote.
Pallet Base
The wooden, steel, or plastic platform at the bottom of an IBC tote that enables forklift handling and stacking.
Data Plate
A metal plate welded to the IBC cage showing UN markings, manufacturer info, date of manufacture, maximum SG, and test results.
Triple Rinse
An EPA-required decontamination procedure for containers that held hazardous substances — three successive rinses with an appropriate solvent before disposal or recycling.
GHS Label
Globally Harmonized System label — a standardized hazard communication label showing pictograms, signal words, and hazard statements for chemical products.
LTL Shipping
Less Than Truckload — a freight method where multiple shipments share space on a single truck. Used for shipping smaller quantities of IBCs over long distances.
FTL Shipping
Full Truckload — a freight method where a single shipment occupies an entire truck trailer. Most cost-effective for shipping 20+ IBCs.
Camlock Fitting
A quick-connect coupling system commonly used on IBCs for fast, tool-free hose connections. Available in aluminum, stainless steel, and polypropylene.
ESG Reporting
Environmental, Social, and Governance reporting — corporate sustainability disclosures that often include IBC recycling metrics as evidence of circular economy practices.
Closed-Loop System
A supply chain model where used IBCs are collected, reconditioned, and returned to service rather than disposed of — minimizing waste and maximizing material value.
Secondary Containment
A safety measure (such as a drip tray or berm) designed to capture spills or leaks from IBC totes. Required by EPA for hazardous liquid storage.
Packing Group
A DOT/UN classification (I, II, or III) indicating the degree of danger posed by a hazardous material. Determines which IBC rating is required for transport.
Composite IBC
The most common IBC type, consisting of a rigid HDPE inner bottle housed within a steel cage framework on a pallet base (UN designation 31HA1).
Hydrostatic Test
A pressure test performed during IBC manufacturing or requalification to verify the container can safely hold its rated volume and weight of liquid.
